ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW: Jack and the Beanstalk at the Everyman Theatre

The Christmas lights are on, the Christmas market is in full swing and the panto has started - Christmas is nearly here. We went along to the opening night of the Jack and the Beanstalk at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham.
Jack and the Beanstalk is the much-loved story of Jack, who reluctantly sells the family cow for a handful of magic beans. The beans grow into a sky-reaching beanstalk with a giant living at the top of it. Our hero Jack must destroy the evil giant to restore harmony into the life of his village and win back the girl he loves - all helped along by a good fairy and a few other colourful characters.
Ex Dynasty star Emma Samms plays the high-flying Fairy Twinkletoes and Jacks mother is hilarious as Dame Trott. Fleshcreep, the villain of the show is slightly reminiscent of Cruella de Vil. It was good to see a good old pantomime cow in this production and the brilliant bovine ‘Buttercup’ comes up trumps. We loved her beautiful eyes. The costumes and scenery are always visually stunning and this year was no exception. The much anticipated giant was one of the highlights of the show – absolutely awesome is all we will say.
The panto is a family tradition that you never grow out of. Our children are now teenagers and have been to the panto nearly every year since they were able to sit still for long enough. It was nice to see them cancel all invites for Friday night in favour of our family panto visit. Tickets are selling fast so don’t be disappointed and leave it until the last minute - book your tickets now!
Jack and the Beanstalk runs until Sunday 8 January 2012 at The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham with tickets priced from £10.
