Renaissance Music at Lodge Park, Gloucestershire

Renaissance Music at Lodge Park, Gloucestershire

Visitors have a rare opportunity to enjoy renaissance music in the authentic setting of 17th century Lodge Park in the north Cotswolds this month.

The National Trust estate is hosting ‘Time stands still’, a programme of Renaissance Lute Ayres, contemporary anecdotes and readings by acclaimed Oxfordshire duo Ayre Tyme.

Rather than a formal concert platform, the pair (Adrian Boorman, Countertenor, and Tricia McLaughlin, Lute) will perform in the Great Room, within the grandstand built especially for such a purpose some 400 years ago. They will perform music from the supreme master of the Lute Ayre, John Dowland, as well as that of his contemporaries; men such as Campian, Ravenscroft, Ford, Pilkington and Arne.

‘This is an exceptional opportunity to experience renaissance life at Lodge Park. Here, guests and the aristocracy would have gathered around the fireplace, enjoying food, drink, good company and musical entertainment.’ says Sigute Barniskyte, Assistant Visitor Services Manager at the estate.

Adrian Boorman adds: ‘All the songs we will perform date from the period late 1500 to late 1600, the time that The Lodge was built, and it’s amazing to think that four centuries ago this very room may well have echoed to the sounds of the actual music you’ll hear on the day of our performance – only back then rather than calling it ‘Early Music’ the audience would have thought of them as ‘pop songs’!’

Built in 1634 as a deerhound racing observation post for the Civil War politician John ‘Crump’ Dutton to impress guests of nearby Sherbourne House, the immaculately restored grandstand is set in acres of beautiful 18th century parkland created by English garden designer Charles Bridgeman.

The performance of ‘Ayre time’ will take place in the Great Room on Sunday 25th September, 1.30pm- 3pm. No booking is required for the recital and there is no additional charge, but normal admission price to the Lodge applies.

For further information, contact Sigute Barniskyte at Lodge Park on 01451 844130.
