Gloucester Cathedral’s Project Pilgrim is on the up!

Gloucester Cathedral’s Project Pilgrim is on the up!

From Monday 5 September, Gloucester Cathedral will be kick-starting Project Pilgrim as the first bit of scaffolding is assembled to begin the installation of solar panels to the Nave roof.

Before the solar panels are lifted into place some significant enabling works will be undertaken including repairs to the guttering and leadwork. Repairs to one of the beautiful roof pinnacles, believed to have been damaged by lightening, will be carried out by the Cathedral Stonemasons team.

The solar panel installation will take place in October and will take approximately three weeks to complete. This innovative venture will mean that Gloucester is set to become the oldest Cathedral in England, possibly even the world, to embrace this very modern technology.

As part of our commitment to a greener and more sustainable future, it is anticipated that the installation of up to 200 panels will reduce the Cathedral’s annual energy costs by 25%, enough to make 2,000 cups of tea every day of the year!

Anne Cranston, Project Manager said “It’s fantastic to finally see all our preparation become a reality as the Cathedral enters a new chapter of its life. We are hugely excited to see the installation of the solar panels and to become a flag ship project for greener energy.”

The “SOS: Sponsor Our Solar Panels” campaign was launched in August 2015 and has raised 90% of the funds needed for the project.

There is still an opportunity for you to be part of this ground-breaking new phase of Cathedral life, supporting the sustainability of this beautiful building long into the future for generations to come.

By supporting this first phase of Project Pilgrim, you will also be unlocking three times as much in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, making your donation incredibly important to the wider project. We welcome donations of any amount with every single penny counting towards achieving our goal.

If you would like to support this fundraising initiative or would like more information, please visit the Cathedral’s website at: www.gloucestercathedral.org.uk/projectpilgrim where you can also download an application form. If you would prefer an application form sent to you in the post please contact the Development Team on 01452 874 965 or email sarah.steele@gloucestercathedral.org.uk
